Planning For Your success
To be successful in this accelerated
program it is important to develop effective study
skills and work habits. Many adults returning to school find
an intensity and level of interest that may have been lacking in
their previous educational experiences. In one of your first courses,
Developing Professional Skills and Standards you will review among
other things, prioritization, time management, and study skills.
These skills while critical to your academic success will bring
added value to your personal and professional life as well.
The Business Department will provide a materials
packet for each course in the on-campus and hybrid programs. These
materials are posted at the course web site in online courses.
These materials provide an overview of the course as well as the
assignments and activities for each 'class meeting'. Review them
carefully well in advance of your first class meeting or your first
online due date. Complete all assigned reading and projects. |
Tips For On-Campus Classes:
- Educators agree, the key to student success is organization
and preparation. Developing effective study skills requires
discipline, focus, and planning. Here are a few guidelines
to assist you in preparing for your class meetings.
- Familiarize yourself with each new class one week prior
to first meeting. Purchase textbooks and pick up course materials
at least one week prior to first class meeting. Call the SCC
Bookstore at 480-423-6554 to confirm textbook availability.
Be prepared to give appropriate course and section numbers.
Allow extra time for delivery if purchasing texts from other
sources. Be sure to pick up Week One assignment card from SCC
Bookstore, The Business Institute, or by email. Please contact Jessica.
- Complete all reading and assignments for Class Meeting One
in advance of first class. You will not be allowed
to turn these assignments in late.
- Review Course Assignment Overview matrix for upcoming weeks
and clarify where necessary.
- Thoroughly review requirements for each assignment. Course
materials often include format and parameters required for
each assignment. The quality of your grade will be dependent
on following these guidelines.
- Assignments must be submitted on due date. Timely submission
of work is a standard expected throughout the program. Instructors
will not accept late work on "minor" assignments.
Major assignments lose one full grade for each class meeting
they are late. Students who know they will miss a class must
provide homework in advance of the missed class meeting (or
send it with another member of their group).
- Utilize the grammar tools in your word processing package!
Use grammar as well as spell check on every paper. Even though
grammar check may slow you down at first, these tools will
quickly improve your writing style and that will make you a
more effective communicator!
- Capture those papers! Assemble and submit all weekly assignments
in a two-pocket folder with your name and group number on the
front. All assignments will be graded and returned by the next
class meeting.
- Be prompt and ready to participate. When class begins you
should be organized and ready to participate in class activities.
Have your textbooks available.
- Prepare your Individual Time Logs and Student Team Record
Sheets. Have these sheets completed and in your folder at the
beginning of each class meeting.
- Instructors are as diverse as students! Instructors will
have diverse styles and expectations. Avoid being drawn into
or initiating discussions where students complain about instructors
or their policies. Instructors can only address those issues
brought to their attention. Therefore, concerns should be discussed
with the instructor directly.
- Keep up with the registration schedule. Register for each
new class at least two weeks in advance of the start date.
That allows us to prepare adequate materials and make appropriate
room assignments. See your schedule for minimum registration
dates.
- Grading policies. Fastrack is a competency-based program,
where grades are based on the level of professionalism displayed
in each assignment. Formatting, content, and quality will guide
the assignment of grades by your instructor. Your instructors
will comment on your work and offer suggestions for improvement.
In some instances you may be allowed to resubmit your assignment
with modifications to qualify for a higher grade. See your
instructor.
- Working in teams. Working in teams can be fun or frustrating,
effective or emotional, and so on. Teams are what you make
of them. Be honest, prepared, deliver on your commitments and
the experience should be a good one. Difficulties should be
discussed openly, without personalizing, and in a timely manner.
Groups can be reconfigured at the beginning of each new class.
If circumstances dictate, notify your instructor.

Good study skills
- Accurately
reading and following instructions is a life skill! Read
instructions and review required formats at least twice
before starting any assignment. Then review your work
carefully before sending assignments to your instructor.
You will lose points if your assignment is incorrect
in content or format.
- "I
work better under pressure!" Don't believe it! Don't
procrastinate! For most of us the quality of our writing
goes down, the closer we get to a deadline.
